What makes Florida different
- Florida lets you test without completing a training program, but three failures on one portion trigger a 120-hour training requirement.
- The written test is offered in English and Spanish and as an audio test; the skills test is English only.
- Under federal law, a nursing home that employs you within 12 months of certification must pay your training and testing fees.
- Challenge candidates must pass both exams within 2 years of their first passed test date.
How to get certified in Florida
- Pick a certification route
Florida has five routes, including testing without formal training (challenge) and lapsed CNA routes.
- Complete the application
Fill in all pages of the Florida CNA application (online at prometric.com/NurseAide/fl) and include fees.
- Complete background screening
Submit fingerprints through the Florida DOH background screening process; the fingerprint vendor charges its own fee.
- Test and get certified
Prometric sends scores to the Board of Nursing in about a week; the Board can take about four weeks to issue your certificate.
Test day checklist
- Bring the required identification listed in the bulletin; IDs must be signed before test day.
- Wear flat, nonskid, closed-toed shoes for the skills test; scrubs are suggested.
- Bring a watch with a second hand.
- Handwashing is evaluated at the start and is not prompted - you are expected to wash without being told.

Federal minimums that apply everywhere
Federal rules set the floor for every state: nurse aide training must be at least 75 clock hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical training (42 CFR 483.152). States can require more. After you are certified, going 24 consecutive months without paid nursing-related work means retraining or retesting before you can work in a Medicare/Medicaid nursing home (42 CFR 483.35(d)).
